Best Mattress Size for Tall Sleepers

Both queen and king are 80 inches long. California king is 84 inches. If you are over 6 ft 2 in tall, those 4 extra inches stop your feet from hanging off.

Foot clearance by height

Most sleep ergonomists recommend at least 6 inches of clearance between the top of the head and the top of the mattress and another 4 inches between the bottom of the feet and the foot of the mattress. The table below assumes you sleep with your head 6 inches from the top edge.

Width trade-off for couples

California king is 72 inches wide vs the standard king's 76. For couples that means 36 inches per person rather than 38. If you are tall but sleeping alone, Cal King is an easy choice. If you are tall and sleeping with a partner, decide what matters more: 4 inches more length or 2 inches more width per person.

Mixed-height couples (one over 6 ft 2 in, one under 5 ft 10 in) almost always pick Cal King. The shorter partner does not need the extra length but does not lose anything by having it.

Beyond Cal King: extra-long options

If you are over 6 ft 8 in, Cal King's 84 inches may still feel short. Specialty manufacturers sell Alaskan King (108 x 108), Wyoming King (84 x 84), and Texas King (80 x 98) at extra cost. These require custom sheets and frames. Source: brand specs from specialty bed retailers and bedinabox.
