Do You Need a Box Spring?
Platform frames: No box spring needed
Platform frames have slats that support the mattress directly. Box springs are not needed and most manufacturers recommend against adding one, it raises the bed height unnecessarily and can void warranties.
Traditional metal frames: Box spring required

Weight Capacity: What to Check
Budget metal frames often have weight limits of 500–700 lbs combined (mattress + sleepers). That sounds like a lot, but a 400 lb couple on a 100 lb mattress is already at limit.
Mid-range slatted platforms typically support 800–1,000 lbs. Center support legs are the key feature, without them, slats bow over time and foam mattresses develop sags.
For King frames specifically, look for center support with at least 3 legs touching the floor. The wider the frame, the more important this is. Skimp here and your mattress warranty may be voided (most manufacturers require adequate center support).
Solid wood frames don't usually advertise weight limits because the limit is structural, they fail gradually by cracking rather than all at once. Expect solid hardwood frames to last 20+ years with normal use.
