Which Should You Choose?
📏 Choose California King
- •You or your partner is 6'2" or taller, the extra 4 inches of length stops feet hanging off
- •Your bedroom is long and narrow (e.g. 11' wide but 14' long), Cal King's narrower profile fits better
- •You sleep alone and want maximum length without extra width you won't use
- •You already own a Cal King bed frame or headboard
⬛ Choose Standard King
- •You're a couple and width matters more than length, 38 inches per person vs 36 inches
- •Your bedroom is roughly square (12x12 to 13x14 is ideal)
- •You want easy bedding availability, King sheets are stocked everywhere, Cal King is specialty
- •You plan to move, standard King frames and foundations are universally available
- •Your height is under 6'2", standard King's 80" length covers most people

The Bedding Problem with California King
Sheets are hard to find in stores
Standard King sheets are stocked in every Target, Walmart, and department store. California King sheets are often only online or in specialty bedding retailers. Selection is limited.
Duvet covers are mostly sold as 'King/Cal King'
Most duvet brands combine both sizes into one SKU. Duvets typically have more slack so they fit both. This is less of an issue than sheets.
Bed frames are not interchangeable
A California King frame will not fit a standard King mattress. If you buy a Cal King now and decide to switch later, you need a new frame. Standard King frames are universally available.
Adjustable bases are more expensive in Cal King
Split California King adjustable bases (for couples with different preferences) are significantly harder to source and cost more than split standard Kings.
The Height Question
| Your Height | Standard King (80") | Cal King (84") |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6'0" (72") | 8" of headroom. No issue. | 12" of headroom. Plenty of room. |
| 6'0" to 6'2" (72–74") | 6-8" of headroom. Comfortable. | 10-12" of headroom. |
| 6'2" to 6'4" (74–76") | 4-6" of headroom. Fine for most sleepers. | 8-10" of headroom. Cal King starts to shine. |
| 6'4" to 6'6" (76–78") | 2-4" of headroom. Feet may brush the foot of the frame. | 6-8" of headroom. Cal King recommended. |
| 6'6"+ (78"+) | Risk of feet hanging off. Not ideal. | Cal King is the right choice. |
