Best Mattress Size If Your Partner Moves a Lot at Night
If your partner is a frequent mover, both the size and the construction of the mattress matter. The extra 16 inches of a king helps; the right material helps more.
Distance matters: how far apart you actually are
On a queen, the centre-to-centre distance between two adults lying on the middle of their side is roughly 30 inches. On a king, it is 38 inches. That 8-inch gap is the difference between an arm's-length touch and having to reach.
Queen (60 in wide)
Centre-to-centre distance: 30 in. A typical adult shoulder is 18 in wide, so the edge of one partner's shoulder is about 6 inches from the edge of the other's.
King (76 in wide)
Centre-to-centre distance: 38 in. Same shoulder width math leaves 14 inches of gap between you, enough that most rolling or repositioning does not register.
Motion isolation by mattress type
Width is only half the equation. Mattress construction determines how much movement crosses the surface in the first place.
| Mattress type | Motion isolation | On a queen | On a king |
|---|---|---|---|
| Innerspring (Bonnell coils) | Poor | Movement transfers across the whole bed | Better because of distance, but still poor isolation |
| Innerspring (pocketed coils) | Fair | Localised, but transfer to partner side noticeable | Good, with the extra width amplifying isolation |
| Hybrid (foam + pocketed coils) | Good | Minor transfer; most couples report acceptable | Very good |
| All-foam (memory) | Excellent | Negligible transfer | Negligible transfer |
| Latex | Good | Some transfer because latex is springy | Good |
| Air bed (split chamber) | Excellent | Each side is independent | Each side is independent |
Decision rules
If you already own an all-foam mattress
Memory foam already neutralises most motion. The size upgrade matters less; only consider a king if other reasons (kids, pets, body size) apply.
If you own an innerspring or older mattress
Both width and construction work against you. Upgrading to a king pocketed-coil hybrid or foam mattress typically resolves restless-partner disturbance.
If only one partner is restless
A split king (two twin XL mattresses on a single king-size frame) lets the restless partner have a firmer or softer surface independently. Movement does not cross the seam between the two mattresses.
